According to legend, Seneacquoteen is a Kalispell Indian word meaning "crossing deep waters". In 1863, gold was discovered in the Wild Horse country of British Columbia. The old trail to the gold fields from south of the border became known as the Wild Horse trail. Seneacquoteen was a principle stopping point on the trail in the mad scramble for gold. In 1864, the Territorial Legislature created Kootenai County to include the five northern counties, the entire panhandle. In all this vast area Seneacquoteen was the largest and most important settlement. In 1880 the Northern Pacific railway was built that by-passed Seneacquoteen. Thereafter, the settlement began to diminish in importance. Early modes of transportation on the Pend Oreille included ferries and steamers. The Seneacquoteen crossing was the location of an important ferry that operated from the mid 1850s until the 1950s. THE MARY MOODY: Shipping and transportation were provided on the waters from Seneacquoteen to the south end of Lake Pend Oreille by steam powered vessels. One of these was the stern-wheeler Mary Moody, built at Seneacquoteen in 1866. Named after the builders daughter, the 85-ton vessel was 108 feet long and had a beam of 24 feet. The cabin was 12 feet wide and 33 feet long. The boat was powered by a 20-hp engine built in Wilmington, Delaware. It is likely this vessel was built here or very close to Seneacquoteen Meadows. We have named our private road "Mary Moody Lane".
